Advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that enable global growth and which underpin our economy and way of life, also increase our vulnerability. As the custodians of technology and the driving force behind this advancement, it is our shared responsibility to play a more active role in ensuring that society is aware of the dangers.
With the support of local organisations, Film and Publication Board, Foundation for Internet Development and Wireless Access Providers’ Association among other, we are able to launch this vital initiative:
A campaign that will address two critical areas of concern which contribute significantly to crimes and loss i.e. the need to increase awareness among technology practitioners about the current crime issues; and the lack of public awareness of the dangers and proactive safety measures. We therefore undertake the challenge to energise the tech community and encourage a culture of cooperation and a shared responsibility between organisations and individuals. In doing so, we will then be “working together to ensure a safe online environment for all”.
ISC AFRICA is designed with a uniquely African mix of activities with tangible outcomes that include the development of new online resources and the distribution of informational resources to schools, businesses and broader society throughout South Africa. Due to our constant and rapidly changing cyber landscape, we have to move beyond a one day, week or month-long campaign as practised in developed countries. This campaign therefore aims to create continuing awareness and education leading from one event to the next to ultimately reach and benefit all our citizens.
Supporting any of the activities as outlined on the ISC AFRICA website, presents an opportunity for stakeholders to highlight their commitment to promoting a safer society through awareness and education. As part of building these mutually beneficial relationships, all organisations are included in a comprehensive and strategic marketing, promotional and public relations campaign.

Note: The term Cybercrime, although widely used in the same context over the past two decades, does not have a precise or universal definition. Due to the varying scenarios and environments, it varies between jurisdictions and differs largely based on the perceptions of those involved – see Cybercrime Definition.
